Kitchen Cabinet Painting

Painting kitchen cabinets can give your kitchen a whole new look. But first, properly set your expectations. Painting your cabinets will make them look better, it does not make them new. Painting cabinets is not a quick task, allow plenty of time, 7 to 10 days. The cabinet doors and drawers must come off. Plan ahead for space to lay them out and work on them. Do not use cheap paint and cheap materials. You want the best results you can get.
  1. Clean the cabinets, remove oily grease and grim.
  2. Remove the doors, the drawers, and all the hardware.
  3. Sand or degloss all the surfaces to be painted.
  4. Wipe down the cabinets to remove dust.
  5. Apply a coat of primer.
  6. After the primer/paint has dried, lightly sand until smooth.
  7. Wipe down the cabinets to remove dust.
  8. Apply a coat of finish paint.
  9. Repeat steps 6 thru 8 to apply a second topcoat.
  10. After the paint has had sufficient time to harden for several days, re-install the cabinet doors, drawers, and hardware.
Painting kitchen cabinets is very time consuming and a tedious process. You can DIY or give your local pro, like me, a call to do it for you.

Cabinet Hardware Replacement

Cabinet hardware typically includes pulls, knobs, hinges, and drawer slides. These items come in many different sizes. All the decorative items come in different materials and colors.

If you are replacing existing hardware, it is important to measure the items and provide direct replacements. For example, a drawer pull has two screws. The distance between these screws is important! An American made pull is measured in inches while a European pull is measured in millimeters. Carefully consider the distance between screw holes before ordering your replacement pulls. Otherwise you may end up having to drill new holes and patch the old holes.

Do your kitchen and bath cabinets have an out-dated look? Are you tired of the golden-oak with brass colored hardware? If so, painting your cabinets and replacing your cabinet hardware will give you a whole new look.

Knobs, Pulls, and Hinges

Cabinet knobs come in a variety of shapes, sizes, styles and finishes. Round, square, rectangular and oval shapes and range in size from about 1 inch to 2-1/2 inches. What knobs all have in common is that they attach to the cabinet by a single screw. Pulls attach to cabinets with two screws. That is the difference between a knob and a pull, the number of screws. Pulls range in size from about 3 inches to 18 inches. Finishes range from white to bronze to stainless steel.

Should I choose a knob or a pull? There is no correct answer. It is purely a matter of personal preference. Whichever you choose, be sure that it feels good in your hand and looks good with your kitchen decor. Sometimes a combination of knobs and pulls work best. When selecting replacement knobs and pulls, make sure they fit the existing attachment holes in your cabinets.

Cabinet hinges come in a number of shapes, sizes, styles, and finishes. It is important to consider the cabinet door overlay to ensure proper fit and function. The overlay is the distance the cabinet door covers the cabinet opening on the hinge side when the door is closed. Another important consideration is if your cabinets have face frames or are frameless. This will help to determine the style of hinge you need: decorative, long arm, compact, European, or semi-concealed.

Refinish Cabinets

Refinishing kitchen cabinets is a way to bring new life into natural wood and stained wood cabinets. Simply said, you refinish cabinets that have not been previously painted and will not be painted. You maintain the natural beauty of the wood. If you like the color of your stained cabinets, refinishing is an option for you.
  1. Clean the cabinets, remove oily grease and grim.
  2. Apply a coat of wood finish.
  3. After the finish has dried, 1 day, apply a second coat of finish, if necessary.
  4. After the second coat of finish is dry, 1 day, your cabinets are ready to be put back into service.
Using this process, no dramatic color change is available. You are re-establishing the current color stain in the wood. You do not strip the finish down to bare wood prior to refinishing. That process is extremely labor intensive. A refinish product is manufactured to be applied over clean previously finished wood.

Cabinet Repair

Cabinets have just a few parts, but things can go wrong. Doors and drawers are opened and closed many times during their life cycle. Here is a list of common repair issues with cabinets.
  • Loose door hinges - typically fixed by tightening the hinge screws
  • Sticky drawers - may be fixed with some lubricant or may require some draw guide part replacements
  • Loose knobs and pulls - fixed by tightening the screws
  • Doors slam shut - install new rubber bumpers near the door edges or install door dampers
  • Doors out of alignment or sagging - adjust the door hinges
  • Worn-out or broken drawer slides - replace drawer slides
  • Broken drawer boxes - repair or replace the drawer boxes
  • Scratches and gouges - fill with color matching putty
If these types of cabinet problems are annoying you, know that they can all be fixed. Help is just a call away.
