How Do You Install Kitchen Cabinet Pull-Out Shelves?
Pull-out shelves, also called slide-out or roll-out shelves, may be installed in your kitchen base cabinets. The shelves rest in slides that allow the shelf to extend out from the cabinet, much like drawers, for easy accessibility.- Measure the cabinet width and depth clear opening, the largest dimension without any interference from the opened door, hinges, or other obstruction in the cabinet. It is also important to check that the door opens 90 degrees or more. The depth is measured from the back wall of the cabinet to the inside edge, not the front, of the cabinet face frame. This assumes no obstructions in the cabinet. These measurements must be taken to within 1/16”
- Determine the best mounting style for your cabinet: base mount, rear mount, or side mount.
- Select standard ¾ extension slides or full extension slides.
- Order custom-made pull-out shelves with slides. You will need to specify your choice of shelf material and shelf height. Much like a drawer box, the shelves come with sides to prevent items from falling off the shelf.
- Install the pull-out slides in the cabinet.
- Install shelf into the slides.
- Install corner guards on the shelves to protect the inside of the cabinet door.
How Do You Replace Cabinet Hardware?
Cabinet hardware typically includes pulls, knobs, hinges, and drawer slides. These items come in many different sizes. All the decorative items come in different materials and colors. If you are replacing existing hardware, it is important to measure the items and provide direct replacements. For example, a drawer pull has two screws. The distance between these screws is important! An American made pull is measured in inches while a European pull is measured in millimeters. Carefully consider the distance between screw holes before ordering your replacement pulls. Otherwise you may end up having to drill new holes and patch the old holes.
Do your kitchen and bath cabinets have an out-dated look? Are you tired of the golden-oak with brass colored hardware? If so, replacing your cabinet hardware will give you a new look.
What Do I Need To Know When Selecting Knobs, Pulls, and Hinges?
Cabinet knobs come in a variety of shapes, sizes, styles and finishes. Round, square, rectangular and oval shapes and range in size from about 1 inch to 2-1/2 inches. What knobs all have in common is that they attach to the cabinet by a single screw. Pulls attach to cabinets with two screws. That is the difference between a knob and a pull, the number of screws. Pulls range in size from about 3 inches to 18 inches. Finishes range from white to bronze to stainless steel.Should I choose a knob or a pull? There is no correct answer. It is purely a matter of personal preference. Whichever you choose, be sure that it feels good in your hand and looks good with your kitchen decor. Sometimes a combination of knobs and pulls work best. When selecting replacement knobs and pulls, make sure they fit the existing attachment holes in your cabinets.
Cabinet hinges come in a number of shapes, sizes, styles, and finishes. It is important to consider the cabinet door overlay to ensure proper fit and function. The overlay is the distance the cabinet door covers the cabinet opening on the hinge side when the door is closed. Another important consideration is if your cabinets have face frames or are frameless. This will help to determine the style of hinge you need: decorative, long arm, compact, European, or semi-concealed.
Can Cabinets Be Repaired?
Cabinets have just a few parts, but things can go wrong. Doors and drawers are opened and closed many times during their life cycle. Here is a list of common repair issues with cabinets.- Loose door hinges - typically fixed by tightening the hinge screws
- Sticky drawers - may be fixed with some lubricant or may require some draw guide part replacements
- Loose knobs and pulls - fixed by tightening the screws
- Doors slam shut - install new rubber bumpers near the door edges or install door dampers
- Doors out of alignment or sagging - adjust the door hinges
- Worn-out or broken drawer slides - replace drawer slides
- Broken drawer boxes - repair or replace the drawer boxes
- Scratches and gouges - fill with color matching putty
